The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides some staggering statistics relating to healthcare worker injuries and the need for safer patient transfer methods. In particular, the CDC notes that healthcare workers experience more serious workplace injuries, such as musculoskeletal disorders, than workers in the mining, construction, and manufacturing industries.

In yet another study of healthcare workers’ compensation claims for back injuries, nursing aides and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, among all occupations, as those most at risk for such injuries. Moreover, nursing aides are at a higher risk of sustaining back injuries than lumbermen, material handlers, and laborers.

From January 1995 to December 2000, 1,728 nursing personnel were followed before and after implementation of a safer transport of nursing home residents. These healthcare workers were advised and trained on how to properly use equipment to lift and transfer patients.

The results showed a significant reduction in injuries involving resident handling, workers’ compensation costs, and lost work day injuries. As a matter of fact, when injury rates associated with patient handling were examined, workers’ compensation claims rates per 100 healthcare staff were reduced by 61 percent; Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injury rates decreased by 46 percent; and first reports of employee injury rates were reduced by 35 percent.
