Body UP® Evolution keeps healthcare workers safe

Body UP® Evolution patient lift protects healthcare workers
Body UP® Evolution keeps healthcare workers safe.

Body UP® Evolution has revolutionized the patient lift industry with its eco-friendly and lightweight patient lift device. More than creating an easy-to-use and dignified patient lift system, Body UP ® Evolution is set to transform the healthcare industry.

First developed and sold in Europe, Body UP® Evolution has finally made it to the United States. An all-in-one piece of equipment, Body UP® Evolution’s patient lift is more economical than similar devices because it takes the place of at least four pieces of equipment used by the mobility-challenged, including:
  • Transport chair
  • Patient lift
  • Commode chair
  • Shower chair

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides some staggering statistics relating to healthcare worker injuries and the need for safer patient transfer methods. In particular, the CDC notes that healthcare workers experience more serious workplace injuries, such as musculoskeletal disorders, than workers in the mining, construction, and manufacturing industries.

In yet another study of healthcare workers’ compensation claims for back injuries, nursing aides and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, among all occupations, as those most at risk for such injuries. Moreover, nursing aides are at a higher risk of sustaining back injuries than lumbermen, material handlers, and laborers.

From January 1995 to December 2000, 1,728 nursing personnel were followed before and after implementation of a safer transport of nursing home residents. These healthcare workers were advised and trained on how to properly use equipment to lift and transfer patients.

The results showed a significant reduction in injuries involving resident handling, workers’ compensation costs, and lost work day injuries. As a matter of fact, when injury rates associated with patient handling were examined, workers’ compensation claims rates per 100 healthcare staff were reduced by 61 percent; Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable injury rates decreased by 46 percent; and first reports of employee injury rates were reduced by 35 percent.

Preventing healthcare worker workplace injuries is imperative to preserving the health of nursing and care giver personnel. The Body UP® Evolution patient lift not only helps prevent healthcare workplace injuries, it also is a more economical and dignified patient lift device. With its durable frame, minimal upkeep, and multi-tasking abilities, the Body UP® Evolution patient lift device will serve the needs of the mobility-challenged for years to come.

Patient Transfer Revolutionized by Body UP® Evolution

Body UP Evolution revolutionizes Patient Transfer
Body UP® Evolution revolutionizes patient transfer.

Because manual patient transfer in the home can be dangerous for both healthcare staff and patients, alternative methods continue to be studied and developed. Body UP® Evolution understands the needs of the mobility-impaired and has revolutionized the industry with its more dignified and eco-friendly patient transfer system.

Challenges for the Mobility-Impaired

Going to and from the bed, the house, and even the car can be difficult for someone with a mobility impairment. It is something that can come with age or debilitating joint diseases, such as arthritis, osteoporosis and podiatric problems.

In addition to being confined to one’s home or hospital bed, the inability to safely lift and transfer patients can lead to physical and psychological issues, including:
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Muscle pain
  • Pressure sores
  • Incontinence
  • Depression
  • Sensory Deprivation
  • Delirium
  • Dementia

There are many mobility products that allow the elderly and mobility-impaired to get out and enjoy life almost as well as they did prior to their disability. A safe patient transfer device not only allows the mobility-impaired to engage in day-to-day functions, it also provides a dignified method for patient transfer and patient lift.

In addition, Medicare generally pays up to 80 percent of the cost of durable medical equipment with a doctor’s approval. Not to mention the fact that Body UP® Evolution’s patient transfer can save money by replacing other assistance equipment including power lifters, commode chairs, bath/shower seats, car/van access lifters, and can even replace your home wheelchair for most daily activities.

Furthermore, Body UP® Evolution’s patient transfer saves space. Compared to other patient transfer devices like the Hoyer Lift, Body UP® Evolution’s patient-friendly design make its presence very discreet when not in use.

Improving Quality of Life

People are living longer than ever. Today, 30 million Americans are seniors. By 2050, there are expected to be almost 90 million American seniors. Enabling seniors and the mobility-impaired to live active and independent lives for as long as possible, as well as those that care for them, will go a long way in improving quality of life.

Body UP® knows how to avoid injuries during patient lift and patient transfer

Body UP® Evolution helps prevent workplace injuries.

Body UP® understands the difficulties many caregivers have when it comes to patient lift and patient transfer. From torn rotator cuff to debilitating back injuries, healthcare workers literally risk their own safety simply doing the job of caring for their patients.

Healthcare Wide Hazards

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare employees suffer more than 200,000 work-related injuries every year. The cost of worker’s compensation in this industry has reached almost $1 billion annually, with healthcare workers in nursing homes twice as likely as workers in other industries to suffer on-the-job injuries.
Healthcare workers most at risk are those required to lift patients and perform safe patient transfer from a wheelchair, Hoyer Lift, or other device. Common injuries include:
  • low back pain
  • herniated discs - a condition in which the discs in the spinal column bulge out, placing pressure on the nerves in the back
  • strained muscles
  • pulled and/or torn ligaments
  • disc degradation

Suffering a workplace injury can result in an out-of-work status for the healthcare employee for an extended period of time, increase the workload of other healthcare facility staff, shortage of staff, and increased fatigue for healthcare employees.

Safe Patient Handling and Ergonomic Solutions

The healthcare industry, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health, ranks alongside construction, trucking, and meatpacking as one of the most dangerous industries in terms of non-fatal injuries in the United States. Better training of staff and more ergonomically-designed equipment are key factors in decreasing the numbers of healthcare work-related injuries.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) recommends minimizing patient lift as much as possible. Proper assist devices for safe patient lift and patient transfer may help decrease healthcare worker injuries.

Unlike the Hoyer Lift, the Body UP® patient lift and patient transfer equipment if light-weight, portable, and eco-friendly. Safe and convenient, the Body UP® patient lift also can be used in place of power lifters, commode chairs, bath/shower seats, and car/van access lifters.

Compared to the price of rotator cuff and back surgeries, the Body UP® patient lift and patient transfer equipment is a fraction of the cost. Not to mention, Body UP® is the ultimate patient lift and patient transfer equipment that will give you the best return on your investment!

Body Up® knows an independent person is a happy person

Finding a comfortable and suitable retirement community that meets all your needs, including wheelchair access and storage for items such as patient lifts, can be a challenge. Body Up® knows knowledge of the healthcare needs of the senior community can go a long way in ensuring those needs are met.

Aging is a time of adaptation and change, and planning for the future will make sure your needs, or the needs of a loved one, are fully met. Many seniors choose to remain in their home as long as possible. When planning ahead, certain needs should be considered:
  • Financial needs. Long-term care can be expensive, and balancing the care you need with where you want to live requires careful evaluation of your budget. You may consider moving to a facility with more onsite care or easier maintenance, or modifying your home and using in-home help if necessary.
  • Social and emotional needs. As you age, your social networks may change. Make sure you have continuing opportunities for maintaining and building new social networks. If you become housebound, it can have an adverse effect on your mental health.
  • Physical and medical needs. As you age, you may need some help with physical needs, including activities of daily living. This could range from shopping, cleaning, and cooking to intensive help with bathing, toileting, eating, and assistance with medication.
When seniors decide to leave the home, it often is to transition to an Assisted Living Community (ALC) where they retain most of their independence. ALCs serve two primary functions: assist with meal preparation and administer medications.

According to the National Center for Assisted Living, 92 percent of residents who move out of Assisted Living Communities do so because of health reasons. In addition, residents of ALCs typically deal with one or more chronic health conditions. These include an array of issues with the 10 most common being:
  1. High Blood Pressure
  2. Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
  3. Heart Disease
  4. Depression
  5. Arthritis
  6. Osteoporosis
  7. Diabetes
  8. COPD and allied conditions
  9. Cancer
  10. Stroke
Continuing to thrive as you age means learning how to maintain your independence for as long as possible. This may mean modifying your own home, or it could mean moving to an Assisted Living Community with more support options on site. Patient Lift equipment increases the ability to travel and move around. In doing so, it allows you to remain independent for as long as possible.
